Have you ever walked into the school cafeteria, and seen this poster (see picture) and wonder what it’s all about? Well, let’s take a moment to explain what this is! 

This year Los Arboles teachers have begun explicitly teaching character traits to all students. Each month a new character trait will be introduced and taught to the students. For that particular month, teachers will be emphasizing the character trait though modeling and examining student behaviors. Read alouds, art projects, and assemblies are just a few of the strategies being used to demonstrate these character traits to the students. Our goal is for students to be able to define and become a living example of what each trait means. Students who embody the trait from a particular month will be recognized at a school assembly.

 Each month a new trait will be assigned and taught. In August and September our trait was “Caring and Kindness”. It was followed by “Respect” in October and “Responsibility” in November/December. In January, our trait will focus on “Trustworthiness and Equity”, or fairness. Ask your student about the traits they have learned so far and encourage them to practice these traits at home too!
