Guided Reading is a time when the students meet with the teacher in small differentiated groups. The teachers select material based on the individual reading levels of the students. Teachers meet with all their students throughout the week at a specific time during the day. While teachers work with a small group of students, other students rotate through different literacy centers based on the Common Core ELA standards.
The reading material comes from the Fountas and Pinnel Reading Program and Scholastic Guided Readers, but teachers also integrate other reading articles and use close reading strategies during this time. Based on the student needs, students also focus on the different phonics skills at this time. All teachers have been receiving professional development to help strengthen the Guided Reading program at Los Arboles.
